Antique Japanese Kagamibuta Netsuke – Bronze Scene of a Seated Man, Ivory Bowl, Meiji Period
Material: Bronze & genuine ivory
Origin: Japan
Period: Late 19th – early 20th century (Meiji era)
Dimensions: Diameter approx. 4.5 cm (1.77 in)
Condition: Excellent antique condition with beautiful patina, minor age-related wear consistent with age.
A fine kagamibuta netsuke featuring a bronze lid with a detailed scene of a man seated near a stream, possibly observing nature or fishing, rendered with depth and realism typical of Meiji period mixed-metal work.
The lid is beautifully set into a smooth ivory bowl showing fine cross-hatching and a warm creamy tone.
The original chain and decorated ojime bead are present — the bead finely engraved with dragon motifs in bronze/brass, adding to the authenticity and charm of the piece.
This netsuke represents the refined artistry of late Edo–Meiji craftsmanship, combining metalwork, ivory carving, and storytelling in miniature form.
Provenance: From an old European collection.
A rare and elegant example of a complete kagamibuta with chain and ojime.
