Daruma Netsuke – Unsigned
Materials and techniques: Carved boxwood (tsuge) with natural patina, deep chisel work and broad tool marks defining the robe folds.
Dimensions: approx. 3.5 × 4.0 × 3.0 cm
Description:
A compact and expressive depiction of Daruma (Bodhidharma) seated in meditation, his hooded robe enveloping the body in rhythmic folds, leaving only the serene yet humorous face exposed. The eyes are directed upward in contemplation, with a faint smile suggesting enlightenment through endurance. The reverse is simply finished, displaying strong tool texture, while the underside shows two large himotoshi typical of early to mid-Edo carving practice.
Condition:
Excellent overall condition with a warm, even patina and fine surface polish from handling. No cracks or restorations visible.
Provenance:
Private European collection.
Remarks:
Daruma, the founder of Zen Buddhism, symbolizes perseverance and spiritual awakening. This netsuke’s primitive yet refined style reflects early-period sensibility—possibly 18th century (Edo period) or a modern homage in the Kyoto folk tradition influenced by artists such as Masanao or Nara-school carvers. The boldly faceted robe treatment and minimal detailing highlight the sculptural strength and meditative stillness of the figure.
