Netsuke of Oni on Barrel with Sword and Scabbard – Edo Period

Materials and techniques: Carved and stained ivory , finely engraved with dark ink details.

Dimensions: Approx. 4.2 × 3.8 × 3.5 cm

Description:
A dramatic carving of an Oni demon crouched atop a large wooden sake barrel, his muscular body tensed and expressive face rendered with remarkable intensity. The underside reveals an exquisitely detailed sword and scabbard, decorated with fine scrolling motifs. Deep incision lines and subtle patina highlight the sense of age and authenticity.

Condition: Excellent, with a warm aged tone and minor natural wear consistent with age.

Provenance: NH, 2020

Remarks:
The Oni, a powerful demon from Japanese folklore, is often portrayed as both menacing and protective — symbolizing strength and the struggle between good and evil. The inclusion of the sword beneath may allude to hidden power or moral restraint.
