Description
A highly unusual and expressive sashi-netsuke by the Osaka master Meikeisai Hōjitsu (法實), depicting the legendary demon-queller Shōki (Zhong Kui) leaning over the mouth of a well. Shōki bends forward with intense focus, both hands braced on the rim as he searches for a lurking oni. The rim of the well is engraved with stylized seal-script characters, adding an archaic aesthetic.
Below, suspended by the cord emerging from the well, hangs a charming oni—clinging to the rope with a playful, surprised expression. This humorous device creates a narrative: the oni tries to escape just as Shōki peers downward.
Carving details are crisp: Shōki’s layered robes, the patterned sash, and the folds of fabric show deep mastery typical of Hōjitsu. The wood has developed a warm rich amber patina with darkened highlights from handling.
Signature:
Underside rim carved with the two-character signature 法實 (Hōjitsu).
Condition
Excellent condition for age. Minor expected handling wear and patina; no visible cracks or restorations. Cord and oni element appear original and well preserved.
