Antique Japanese Bronze Ryusa Netsuke in a shape of Fukube Japanese Gourd

The ancient Japanese word for gourd isĀ fukubeĀ and since fuku means happiness, the gourd shape is associated with happiness. In Zen philosophy, the circle represents enlightenment, the implication being that by nourishing the spiritual self through meditation one may grasp the true meaning of existence.

With its homophonic association with ā€œgood fortune and prosperityā€ (“ē¦ē„æ”) gourds carried the connotations ofĀ having abundant offspring and broad-mindedness. It often appeared in myths and legends alongside immortals and had an undeniable connection to the culture of Daoist spiritual cultivation.
