Japan, late Edo – early Meiji period (circa 1850–1880)
Materials: Lacquered wood, porcelain/ceramic, ivory, silk cord
Dimensions: Inrō height 8 cm
Description
An oval black lacquer inrō with rich nashiji (sprinkled gold) ground, featuring in a circular cartouche a finely modeled porcelain/ceramic relief of Okame (Otafuku), depicted with a joyous expression and holding flowers. The scene is signed in gilt 道甫 (Dōho) beside the figure. The matching ivory netsuke, carved as the head of a smiling Okame, bears the signature 明山 (Meizan / Akiyama) inside the himotoshi. The ensemble is joined by a purple silk cord and an ivory ojime bead.
Remarks
Such mixed-material inrō combining lacquer with ceramic plaques are rare and highly collectible. The depiction of Okame, the goddess of mirth and good fortune, symbolizes happiness, charm, and prosperity.
The piece originates from a North German collection and remains in excellent condition with minimal age wear.
