An elegant and expressive Meiji-period netsuke depicting Jurojin (寿老人), one of the Seven Lucky Gods (Shichifukujin) and the deity associated with longevity, wisdom, and scholarly virtue.

The god is shown seated and leaning forward with a gentle smile, closely examining a minogame turtle, the auspicious long-tailed turtle symbolizing endurance and an exceptionally long life.

Jurojin’s features are wonderfully rendered:

  • His calm, smiling face is carved with subtle cheek folds and softened contours, giving the figure remarkable warmth and personality.

  • He wears a finely engraved scholar’s hat (唐巾), the crosshatching executed with precision characteristic of quality Meiji workmanship.

  • The flowing robes are carved with fluid folds and decorated with delicate engraved textile patterns, skillfully inked for contrast.

  • The turtle, nestled before him, displays a detailed raised shell, naturalistic limbs, and crisply engraved hair-like texture to the minogame tail.

The underside reveals a pair of well-shaped himotoshi, rounded and smooth from wear, confirming its functional origins. The composition is intimate and narrative, capturing a quiet moment of contemplation between deity and symbol.

Condition

Excellent antique condition with a warm, even patina. Light age toning and tiny age-related lines typical of ivory. No chips, losses, or restorations detected. Inked details remain strong and crisp.

Signature

Engraved signature on the reverse 親弘 (Chikahiro). The calligraphy corresponds to Meiji-period workshop signatures, likely a carver of the Chika-school circle active in the late 19th century.

Private collection.
