A finely carved netsuke depicting a rat curled protectively around a chestnut, its tail forming a compact loop beneath the body. The modelling is soft and naturalistic, with subtle hairline incisions over the flanks and tail, and smooth high-polish areas over the back and head. The eyes are darkly inlaid, giving a lively expression typical of Kyoto-school realism.
Signature:
Signed Rantei (蘭亭) in an oval reserve beneath the tail. The signature and overall style are consistent with the Ran studio tradition, though the execution suggests a talented follower rather than Rantei himself.
Condition:
Good overall condition with visible signs of restoration, including minor re-polishing .Warm age patina and light surface wear consistent with handling.
Provenance:
Private European collection.
Remarks:
The rat (nezumi) symbolizes cleverness and prosperity, often shown with a nut or chestnut as a token of abundance. The fluid composition and delicate fur rendering reflect the Kyoto-school’s refinement and the influence of Rantei’s workshop.
